Past Workshops
The Workshop on Programming Languages and Operating Systems (PLOS) has
its root in the ECOOP workshop series on Object-Orientation and Operating
Systems (OOOSWS), which started at ECOOP'97. Over the past years the
number of participants grew constantly and some of the papers presented resulted
in journal publications. In 2004, we decided to give the workshop a more
interactive format and a stronger focus on the special tension between programming
languages and operating systems. This was emphasized by shifting the
workshop name.
In 2005, workshop attendees suggested to try to give the workshop a higher
visibility. They also suggested to intermittently hold the workshop at programming
languages and operating systems conferences, respectively. Therefore, we
decided to give up the affiliation with ECOOP and instead propose to
hold PLOS as part of the workshop program of ASPLOS XII, where it should
be a natural fit and be able to attract a higher number of participants. In order
to avoid the name clash with ASPLOS we temporarily had to rename the
workshop. The result was "Linguistic Support for Modern Operating Systems". In 2007
returned to the original name.
